What is Whitby Jet?
Formed from fossilised wood millions of years ago, Whitby Jet is famously associated with the coastline around Whitby and North Yorkshire.
When carefully cut and polished, the natural material develops an intensely deep, velvety-black lustre. Its dramatic colour makes a beautiful contrast against sterling silver and colourful gemstones, creating jewellery that feels timeless yet wonderfully contemporary.
Each natural piece has its own subtle character, making Whitby Jet especially suited to jewellery designed to be treasured.
Handmade Whitby Jet Rings
Our collection includes both traditional and contemporary Whitby Jet rings, from hand-cut Jet set into sterling silver to our distinctive handmade River Rings.
Created in our North York Moors workshop, selected River Rings combine locally sourced Whitby Jet with materials including Opal, Amethyst, Carnelian and metallic leaf.
Designs such as Northern Sky contrast fiery Opal against dramatic black Whitby Jet, while Carnelian Cosmos combines Jet, warm Carnelian and shimmering Opal to create a miniature night sky around the band.
Because we work with natural materials and create our inlays individually by hand, each ring develops its own pattern and character. No two are ever quite identical.
Men's Whitby Jet Rings
Whitby Jet is particularly striking in men's jewellery.
