What is Whitby Jet?

Whitby Jet is an extraordinary natural material formed from ancient fossilised wood dating back around 183 million years to the Jurassic period.

Closely associated with the coastline around Whitby in North Yorkshire, Jet has been prized for jewellery for thousands of years.

When carefully cut and polished, it develops an intensely deep black lustre that contrasts beautifully with Sterling Silver, gold tones and colourful gemstones.

Handmade Whitby Jet Rings

Created in our North York Moors workshop, selected River Rings combine Whitby Jet with gemstones including Opal, Amethyst and Carnelian, together with metallic details.

Designs such as Northern Sky contrast fiery Opal against dramatic black Whitby Jet, while Carnelian Cosmos brings together Jet, warm Carnelian and shimmering Opal to create a miniature night sky around the band.

Because our River Ring inlays are individually created by hand, each develops its own pattern and character. No two are ever quite identical.
